PHOTO SERIES

Spectator, 2018

Recently I have noticed and experienced many instances of sexual harassment and assault on campus and throughout the media. News of these events comes and goes in waves and is only really talked about due to large scale, publicized unfortunate events. Because of all of this I have become frustrated with the common occurrence of these things as well as the lack of productive conversation around these topics that are so often perceived as taboo. In creating this project, I attempt to illustrate the commonality of these events and increase awareness and help create effective conversations around these topics.

In order to achieve this, I used a tripod and self-timer, and shot a series of photographs with myself as the subject. I posed in spaces and states of being that capture the vulnerability and the commonality of these instances. I decided to use myself as the subject to create a greater connection to the series and subject. Also to show the wide range of occurrences that could happen to any one person, from unwarranted advances to sexual assault. In creating this project I hope to show how common these situations can be, as well as bring about conversation.
